The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Recently, my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram 

and various other social media networks 

have exploded with the 

" ALS Ice Bucket Challenge".

Now, its great that so many people across the world 

want to take up the challenge 

to raise money and awareness for the cause.

But just take a minute and ask your self, 

WHY are you taking up the challenge? 

Is it simply to join in the hype of it

on social media and tell your friends 

you did the ALS ice bucket challenge?

OR

Is it to actually support the cause?

Throwing a bucket of ice cold water on yourself and 

filming it and then posting it on social media

does create awareness for the disease. 

However the question to ask yourself is.....

Do you know what the ALS disease is?

   I think if you are going to do the 
ALS Ice Bucket Challenge 

you should know what the cause is all about and 

at least know what the disease is. 

By doing the challenge and not know how this 

disease affects so many people, 

really defeats the aim of the challenge. 

So here are a few facts about the ALS disease before you 

go dump that ice cold bucket of water on yourself.

1. ALS stands for Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

2. Its affects nerve cells (motor neurons) in the brain and 

   spinal cord. Motor Neurons reach form the brain

 to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the whole body.

3. As there is no cure or treatment that 

halts or reverses the ALS disease 

it will eventually lead to death. 

4. An average of 15 people are diagnosed with ALS daily. That's more than 5,600 people in a year. 

5. ALS is responsible for 2 deaths per 100,000 people.

6. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, 

ethnic or socioeconomic boundaries.
